Burundi Ruhororo
The cultivation of coffee in Burundi began in the 1930’s, though it has only been in the past two decades Specialty Coffee status has truly been embraced. This coffee comes from the Ubwizabwikawa (meaning the beauty of coffee) Co-Operative in the Kayanza region. One of the Co-Ops Pillars which resonate with us is “Direct access to market, increasing the revenue of farmers to improve their livelihood”. Later in 2012 the Co-Op joined likeminded groups in the region to form a Union which has Fair Trade Certification. Collectively the Union has 1800 members, 630 of them are women.
